REDD+ and the WUR network
The REDD@WUR network is a network of about 80 researchers at Wageningen University & Research Centre who are actively engaged in REDD+ related research. The network aims to bring interdisciplinary knowledge to bear on cutting-edge theoretical and policy-relevant questions around REDD+. The network focuses in particular on prospects to deliver co-benefits through REDD+ and on transparent and effective Monitoring, Reporting and Verification systems to measure carbon sequestration and co-benefits from REDD+ activities.
The REDD@WUR network is part of the INREF Seed Money project called “The sustainability and transparency of REDD+: developing an interdisciplinary network and research initiative at WUR and beyond”, which runs from June 2011 to March 2012. The project is a cooperation of 6 chair groups:
The REDD@WUR project’s main objectives are to:
- Build an active interdisciplinary research network on REDD+ at Wageningen UR;
- Establish and strengthen collaborations between Wageningen UR and REDD+ researchers and practitioners in partner countries, at the moment focusing on Indonesia, Ghana and India;
- Develop an interdisciplinary research programme on REDD+ which will be hosted and coordinated by WUR in cooperation with universities and institutes in the partner countries.
REDD+ related research @WUR
The REDD@WUR network currently has of more than 80 members from various chair groups and research groups at Wageningen UR. About 50 of them are actively involved in REDD+ related research in a wide variety of fields, including:
- Monitoring, reporting and verification
- Governance of REDD+
- Co-benefits & safeguards for REDD+
- Payments for ecosystem services
- Certification of REDD+ and PES
- Analysis of land use change & consequences for carbon sequestration
- Agriculture and REDD+
- Carbon capture in peatlands (including water management / hydrological restoration)
- Drivers of deforestation and forest degradation
- Carbon sequestration in forest floor litter and forest soils
- Forest management, effects of logging and forest management on carbon sequestration
- Atmospheric gases and modelling of atmospheric chemistry
In addition to the 6 chair groups that run the REDD@WUR research project (ENP, FNP, GRS, ESA, ESS-CC, and FEM), the following Wageningen UR chair groups and research groups are involved in REDD+ related research:

Researchers at Wageningen UR who carry out REDD+ related research are working in nearly 30 countries in three main continents: Latin America, Africa and Asia. The map above shows the countries in which Wageningen University & Research Centre is active in research (projects) related to REDD+.
How to participate in the REDD@WUR network
We would like to invite all WUR colleagues who are working on or interested in REDD+ related research to become involved in the REDD@WUR network. Interested colleagues can fill out a short questionnaire and return it to the network manager of the REDD@WUR network: marjanneke.vijge@wur.nl. We will then add you to the REDD@WUR mailing list and provide you with regular updates on the networks’ activities, research, projects, and other news. Comments, suggestions and initiatives for the network or ideas for possible collaborations are also more than welcome.
