In the context of a number of ongoing United Nations and European Commission developments in the area of enhanced sharing and exchange of both space-based and in situ observations of geographic data and information, which are increasingly underpinning a variety of economic and environmental development themes, the Italian Commission for Geographic Information, in close coordination and cooperation with the European CEN/TC 287 Standardization Committee and FAO through its Environment, Climate Change and Bioenergy Division, is organizing a series of workshops on land cover classification, spatial data infrastructure (SDI) development and related standardization and interoperability aspects, with a focus on but not limited to the countries of the Mediterranean basin.
