10 Oct 2006 15:30 - 10 Oct 2006 17:00
Unit: Wageningen UR
Location: Room: V67 Leeuwenborch building (building 2001, downstairs)

On the occasion of the PhD defense of Jacob van Etten, a CERES seminar is organized. Dr. Edward F. Fisher (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies) will give a lecture:

“Broccoli and Desire: Markets and Moralities in the Maya Highlands”

In this talk, Fischer looks at the hidden world of broccoli production and what it means for the highland Maya farmers who grow it for export as well as the American consumers who eat it as part of a healthy diet.  Focusing the economic and moral imperatives that drive both production and consumption, Fischer argues that indigenous farmers and American shoppers are bound together through economies of desire.

Edward F. Fischer is an anthropologist. He has written or edited six books, including the award-winning Cultural Logics and Global Economies; he has also won several awards for his lectures and he stars in a twenty-four part video series.
